80 mm studs
sometimes people ask me why it takes so many hours to restore a 911!
i have never kept track of my time & hours because to me its still my hobby,
once you start counting hours & dollars then it becomes a job :)
that is also the reason why i am NOT BUILDING CUSTOMER CARS!
here is a great example of one of the many jobs that ends up taking many
hours but looks like it takes a few minutes.
i have been using 72MM studs on a lot of my recent builds as i LOVE the racy look of long studs & open ended Lug Nuts..
so for my current labor of LOVE my 72STR I decided i would go with a slightly longer stud.........
100MM was too long so i settled on 80MM
all was good up to this point,
it wasn.t until we pressed the 80 mm studs into the rear hub that we realised
they were almost 1 " short on the thread comapared to the 72 mm studs.
not wanting any fender -wheel rubbing issues that may have resulted in the addition of spaces....
i decded to cut the treads down almost 1 " to my desired depth..
let the fun begin
80 mm studs in the rear hub installed in a bench vise..
i installed a rear rotor for the desired thread depth & went to work.
a bit of TAP MAGIC OIL & 14 mm cutting die & off i went,,
i made sure not to cross threads at the start & after every full turn i reveresd
the die to avoid metal shard clogging..
after the first 10 were done .they were pressed out of the hubs & the next 10 were installed & cut .
some TIME LATER all 20 were done & pressed free from the hubs.....
now i realized that i would need to coat them to prevent "rusting" so i decided to send them out for black zinc plating..
BAG O STUDS....RE THREADED ......
another part of the porsche slippery slope..
NO DOUBT IT WILL BE WORTH IT IN THE END :)
Cheers
